My friend was grumping about the wind. We were headed to a church function and she didn’t want her hair all wind-blown. My friend is no stranger to pain and suffering, so why let a windy day get you down? I gently teased her about her attitude, and said, “Well, at least it’s not raining too.”
Life is full of adversity—large and small. I’ve been blessed with good health, but I can relate to emotional pain and the suffering that can bring. When I was going through a dark time, I focused on a verse in the Bible, Philippians 4:8 (NLT) “Fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable and right. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”
One day I went for a walk on my lunch break, knowing if my depressed mood continued I’d be unable to focus on my job and just dissolve into a puddle of tears. I started to thank God for whatever I could think of. “OK, I’m walking—my legs and feet work. I can swing my arms and wiggle my fingers. I can hear the sounds around me and I can see where I’m going.” On and on I walked, thanking and praising God. By the time I was back at work, my mood had lifted and I was able to get through the afternoon. Later I composed this little ditty.
I thank God for my fingers. I thank God for my toes.
I thank Him for my eyes and ears and also for my nose.
I’ll use my mouth to praise the Lord and bless His Holy Name.

A recent message printed inside my chocolate Dove square said, “Instead of complaining, try to find a solution.” I may not be able to change the direction or force of the wind, but I can adjust my attitude and look for the small things that are so easy to miss.
